History of The Thin Red Line Magazine (TRL)

Established in its present form in 1947, the magazine is produced from articles written by all members of the larger “Argylls family”, from serving and territorial soldiers to past members of the Regiment, Cadets and Home Headquarters/Museum staff.

Prior to 1947 the “Thin Red Line” was published solely as the Regimental Magazine of the 2nd Battalion.  First printed on the 31st January 1894, whilst the Battalion was in India, it was comprised of 16 pages and was priced in Indian coinage at 2 annas. A previous short lived regimental paper had been printed by the 2nd Battalion in 1892 and 1893 entitled the “Sutherland News”.

The 1st Battalion created its own paper the “Regimental News” in February 1884, whilst serving in South Africa, it was priced at 1 penny, consisted of four pages and was produced monthly. Its run came to an end in 1892. A battalion paper was re-instated in 1910,  under the new title of the “Argyllshire Highlanders News”.

Regular issues of both magazines stopped for the duration of World War One. In April 1922, a new issue of the Argyllshire Highlanders News stated “We welcome the news that, contemporary with our rebirth, the old 2nd Battalion magazine will also make a re-appearance”. The TRL magazine continued as the paper of the 2nd Battalion until its last issue in August 1939. Meanwhile the 1st Battalion struggled to produce regular issues and came to an end in 1929, or shortly afterwards. A news sheet entitled the “Thin Red Line” was published in 1944 and 1945, however was not produced again in magazine form until its re-launch in 1947.
