HM The Queen was appointed as Colonel-in-Chief of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise’s) by her father, HM King George VI, on her 21st birthday in 1947. Her Majesty has not only continued to visit the Regiment regularly throughout the years at Stirling Castle, but also the Regular and Territorial Army battalions at their various locations. She has also presented at least four sets of new Colours to the Regiment.
On the formation of The Royal Regiment of Scotland in 2006, Her Majesty, The Queen, became the Colonel-in-Chief of the new regiment, but graciously agreed to remain as the Royal Colonel of the Argylls. In 2007, Her Majesty had been associated with the Argylls for 60 years: 59 years as Colonel-in-Chief and a year as Royal Colonel. This anniversary was marked by a lunch at Stirling Castle, to which members of the Regimental family were invited to celebrate with their Royal Colonel (see above). A new piece of regimental silver had been commissioned to commemorate the occasion, a representation of figures in the famous Thin Red Line painting, which commemorates the famous battle honour of Balaklava.
