Special Exhibition, 14th May - 21st May, 2010

Education - Creative Writing Workshops

Budding authors from the adult creative writing group had their work displayed at an exhibition in Stirling Castle, from Friday 14th May to Friday 21st May, 2010.

The event was launched on Friday 14th May at 2.30pm in the Exhibitions Space, Nether Bailey.  It forms part of Adult Learners’ Week and celebrates a year of partnership between the Regimental Museum of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Historic Scotland’s Education Unit,  and Stirling Council’s Adult Learning Team.

In addition, one of the writing groups visited BBC Scotland’s new premises in Glasgow to audio record excerpts of their written work, in the LAB  (Learn at BBC) department.  Their work, some of which was read by a professional actor, was put onto a CD and was played during the exhibition.

Training Depot

Exhibition - "Left, right, left, right. Swing those arms!"

In 1881, Stirling Castle became the Regimental Training Depot for the Argylls. It remained the place where recruits came for their basic training right up to 1964. Even now the link continues.

Their Words

“Stirling Castle hadn’t changed much since the 15th century and my bedroom was about 30ft high. It had water running down the walls...” Denis Forman

“When the annual garden party took place we children lay on the ramparts and watched all that went on below.” Mairi Paterson

“The assault course was limited but nonetheless effective and ran along the ramparts.” Former Argyll

On Guard

Boer War Statue

An imposing 2.5 metre bronze statue of an Argyll has stood guard on the esplanade for a century. Weighing 1.3 tonnes, he was commissioned by the officers and men of the Regiment to commemorate their fallen comrades in the Boer War of 1899 to 1902.
