Musket Powder Horn, 1825

The thistle decorated musket powder horn is inscribed “Sergeant Jas Croll 91st Regiment, Jamaica 1825”. It was originally filled with gunpowder for priming and firing his musket.

James (Jas) Croll enlisted in 1808 and fought throughout the Peninsular War 1808 - 1814 (part of the Napoleonic Wars 1803 - 1815) before being sent home at the end of 1825 having survived life in the West Indies. Whilst garrisoned in Jamaica from 1822 to 1831 the 91st lost 626 men to disease.
