Spode Feldspar Porcelain Dish
Spode Feldspar Porcelain Dish thought to have been broken and thrown away when The 91st Argyllshire Highlanders were stationed on the island of St Helena from 1836 to 1842. The dish was later bought by an officer of the 91st in 1880, when a detachment from the Regiment returned to the island. The French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte had been exiled to St Helena and had died there. By 1842 the French government had decided to repatriate his embalmed body to France. The 91st were present at the exhumation of Napoleon’s body and provided a guard to watch over it, prior to its transportation back to France.
