Object of the Month - Camera, 1914 - 1918
The Kodak Box Camera was used during the First World War (1914-1918) to photograph various subjects in France, Belgium and Salonika. Images were captured on a roll of film. When taking a picture the lens was extended out from the main body to expose the small (+ shaped) glass viewer, which you looked through. Once you had composed the picture you pressed the metal button below the viewer to take the photograph. This must have proved to be difficult as the scene you were about to capture was upside down when you looked through the viewer.
The Kodak Box Camera can be seen in the Boer War and First World War gallery.
