Jingling Johnnie, 1793 -1799

Object of the Month - Musical Instrument, "Jingling Johnnie", 1793-1799

Jingling Johnnie, sometimes known as a Turkish Crescent. This was originally attached to a long pole and carried by the Drum Major of the Sutherland Fencibles, from 1793-1799. During the 18th century a craze for Turkish regimental music swept through European armies, many of whom adopted several of the instruments played by Turkish army musicians. The crescent shaped headpiece is engraved with the words “Sthd Fble” (Sutherland Fencibles), the image of a Scottish wildcat (the crest of the Sutherland Clan) and the motto “Sans Peur” (Fearless/Without Fear). When played, the sound from the bells added volume to the music and helped the other musicians keep time. Many of the men who served in the Fencibles unit went on to join the 93rd Regiment when it was raised in 1799.

The Jingling Johnnie can be seen in the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders gallery.
