Before Your Visit

Free Planning Visit
We recommend that you book a free planning visit to the Museum before you bring your class. This will allow you to gather essential information about the facilities and help you prepare your risk assessment.

Hazard Information Sheet
The Hazard Informationn Sheet is intended as a preparatory tool and should not replace your own risk assessment. For further information regarding pedestrian access, and internal and external hazards, please visit Historic Scotland’s website.

Access
Access to Museum based activities is via spiral staircases, which may cause problems for those with limited mobility. However, the education room is accessible and its activities can be adapted by the teacher or group leader to meet the needs of the pupils. All abilities are welcome and we are happy to discuss any needs you may have.

Responsibilities
Teachers must:
• ensure that they have enough adults to provide adequate supervision at all times during their visit (at least 1 to 10 for ages 8 to 16, 1 to 6 for ages 5 to 7 and pre-school 1 to 2),
• ensure that pupils have pencils, clipboards and activity sheets if necessary,
• ensure that pupils and accompanying adults know why they are visiting the Museum and what is required of them,
• ensure that pupils wear sensible clothing and footwear, and bring packed lunches if necessary.

During Your Visit

On Arrival
A member of staff will meet your class at the entrance of Stirling Castle and escort them to the education room, where they will be introduced to the session. The class may be split into groups depending on its size, your requirements, and the activity. For further information please contact our Education Officer.

Responsibilities
Teachers and group leaders must:
• understand that they are responsible for their pupils at all times (visitors and staff must not be disturbed by their behaviour and Museum property must not be damaged in any way),
• ensure that their pupils are kept near and in sight at all times,
• ensure that their pupils are focused on the activity,
• ensure that their pupils do not lean on the cases (please use clipboards),
• minimize any health and safety issues which may arise, (see Hazard Information Sheets and Free Planning Visits),
• ensure that pupils follow Museum staff instructions quietly and calmly in the event of an emergency,
• inform Museum staff if a pupil feels unwell,
• ensure that food and drink are not consumed in the Museum,
• understand that we may ask the class or group to leave the Museum if they fail to follow these rules.

Lunch Rooms
A lunch room is available on request; please contact Historic Scotland for further information.

Toilets
Toilets are located at the entrance and exit of the Museum and throughout Stirling Castle.
