Its traditions have been carried on by the 1st Battalion.Palestine, 1945 - 1948The 1st Battalion arrived in Palestine towards the end of 1945. British Guiana (Guyana), 1953The small colony of British Guiana suffered unrest and the Regiment was sent in 1953 to help maintain law and order in support of the civil authorities. Cyprus, 1958-1959In 1958, the Regiment sailed for Cyprus, where the Greek Cypriot terrorist organisation EOKA, was continuing its campaign of assassination and sabotage against local Turkish Cypriots and the British presence in Cyprus. Aden, 1967British rule over the colony of Aden was drawing to an end by the mid 1960s and it was due to be given full independence by 1968. |
