Commander Peter Olive MA Royal Navy
Peter Olive joined the Royal Navy in 1989 as a direct graduate entrant from Cambridge University. After Dartmouth and Fleet Time, he undertook watch-keeping and navigational roles in a variety of ships, including operational tours in the Gulf and Adriatic, as well as fishery protection duties in UK home waters.
Qualifying as a Principal Warfare Officer in 1997, he thereafter served as the Gunnery and Operations Officer in HMS NORFOLK, highlights of which included award of the Sea Wolf trophy and operations in Sierra Leone and the Adriatic.
An appointment to the UK Maritime Battle Staff was followed by command of HMS LEDBURY 2002-2004. During his time in command the ship undertook a variety of duties, the most significant of which was Coalition mine clearance operations in Iraq's inland waterways during the opening stages of TELIC 1. The ship also received the Fleet Warfare Development Trophy for work undertaken on Force Protection in minor war vessels.
Promoted in 2005, Commander Olive attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course, attaining the BAe Air Prize, before deploying for duties as the Staff Operations Officer to the UK Maritime Component Commander in Bahrain. He was then appointed to the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre where he championed a major review of UK Joint planning doctrine.
Commander Olive assumed command of HMS ARGYLL on 8th May 2008, taking over from Commander Gavin Pritchard.
