Militia, Volunteer and Territorial Battalions

1st Volunteer Service Company, Upper Square, Stirling Castle, c 1901.

From the earliest times, all able-bodied men not serving elsewhere, were called upon to defend their districts or reinforce the regular army. We aim to tell you something of the history of these battalions from 1639 to the present day.
