In the British Army, animals are either regimental or officially recognised mascots and regimental pets. The army pays the expenses of regimental mascots; and when a mascot has been officially accepted, it will receive a regimental number, rank, rations and will be able to progress through the ranks. Regimental mascots take part in parades and ceremonial occasions; and often live in suitable accommodation in the barracks with the Regiment.

Goats, rams and even a red deer have become mascots of the Regiment in its various forms, but there is one type of animal which has become synonymous with The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and that is the Shetland pony.
