Mascots

Cruachan II enjoys a bottle of beer, Stirling Castle

Animals have always played a part in the life of the British Army; particularly horses for transport and dogs for guard duties. Soldiers have also adopted animals, but when the custom of having official regimental mascots begun is unclear. The goat belonging to the Royal Welch Fusiliers during the American War of Independence (c1775) seems to be the first record of an official regimental mascot.
